Join us on Sunday, July 26 for a workshop all about cinematography with award winning Canadian cinematographer KIM DERKO. Free for Saskatchewan Filmpool members. $20 for non-members.
Learn basic fundamentals and advanced techniques of cinematography from a working professional who has mastered the art of the moving image. Have a project you are working on and have questions about cinematography? There is no better time then to ask Kim Derko on Sunday at the workshop.
Kim Derko c.s.c. is a full member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers, IATSE 667, the Directors Guild of Canada & The International Caucus of Female Cinematographers.
A graduate of Emily Carr College of Art & Design in Vancouver, Derko studied art history, colour theory and photography before becoming a cinematographer.
Recently, Derko shot the remake of Cronenberg's 1977 RABID - a feature film directed by the Soska Sisters, produced by Back 40 Pictures which premiered at Fright Fest in the UK this August. Other work this past year included shooting Tandem Unit for 2 episodes of Suits Season 8 and 2nd Unit on Schitt’s Creek. Previous 2nd unit Director of Photography credits include Reign , VFX Unit for the feature film ANON, The Robber Bride, The Good Times are Killing Me and the BBC mini series: The State Within.
Derko was a camera operator on Martin Scorcese's documentary about SCTV, shot at Toronto's Elgin Theatre.
She garnered a Gemini Award win for cinematography of Youkali Hotel in 2004, and won Best Cinematography for A Winter Tale at the Zuma Film Festival 2006. She was also nominated for a Canadian Screen Award in 2011 for best photography in a comedy series for Winging It.
Derko shot Season 2 of Save Me for CBC / ITHENTIC for creator Fab Filippo which is streaming on CBC Gem.
DP series credits include In Contempt for BET /Viacom, a legal drama starring Erica Ash and Star Falls for Nickelodeon / Netflix, five seasons of Family Chanel’s hit series The Next Step and the television series: Lost and Found Music Studios for Disney/Family Channel.
Feature film D.P. credits include - Rodman Flender’s: The Nature of the Beast - ABC / Family, & Midnight Masquerade - for Hallmark.
Indie Features include Su Rynard’s Kardia, John Greyson’s The Law of Enclosures, Frances Anne Solomo’s: A Winter Tale and Keoni Waxman’s The Highwayman.
Aside from being a director of photography and camera operator, Derko has directed 6 episodes of The Next Step and two episodes of Odd Squad for PBS along with several short films which have all premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Coronation Park, co-directed in collaboration with Su Rynard premiered at the Toronto Urban Film Festival. She has directed numerous music videos and spots for VH1 and won a best independent music video award at Canada's MMVAs for Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet's They Don't Call them Chihuahuas Anymore.
