February is Here: Black History Month & The Lunar New Year!

February 1st is an important cultural date in our province and around the world as it signifies the start of Black History month, as well as marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year! The Filmpool would like to wish a belated Happy Lunar New Year to everyone who celebrates! 2022 is the Year of the Tiger, a symbol of strength and resilience in Asian cultures and a positive omen for the year ahead! We would also like to acknowledge that the month of February is Black History Month, an important annual observance to recognize the histories of black folks in Canada and North America. Below you can find some links to learn more about and engage with Black History Month in Canada: The Government of Canada's website has resources and programming to learn more about Black History Month in Canada along with several events and festivities designed to honour the legacy of Black Canadians. Black in Sask, an advocacy and social awareness group within Saskatchewan, has a website and social media pages with lots of useful resources and informative guides for Sask-based cultural learning and activism. They are working on several ongoing cultural initiatives on the provincial and municipal levels to address system racism and anti-Blackness within the prairies. Black in Sask accepts donations and has regular volunteer opportunities as well for those wanting to take action and directly support this incredible group. Truly Alive Youth and Family Foundation Inc., a Saskatoon-based non-profit organization and conduit for Saskatoon Black Canadian Alliance Network, has virtual programming throughout February designed to celebrate historic and ongoing contributions of Black Canadians from coast to coast.
